A Little About This Trip
Five days in Rome lets you go beyond a checklist of landmarks and actually enjoy the neighborhoods between them. You will still cover the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and Vatican City, but you also get time for vintage shopping in Monti, a dedicated museum day and a final adventure beyond the historic center. 🏛️ One of my favorite moments was looking across the rooftops from the Altar of the Fatherland toward the Colosseum and ruins—it is enormous, free to enter and so easy to work into your first day. 🤍
This route also leaves plenty of space for the food that made Rome especially memorable, from a lemon cornetto at Barnum to carbonara and the longest supplì cheese pull at Osteria da Fortunata. 🍝 On day five, choose the Appian Way and catacombs, Ostia Antica or Tivoli depending on what excites you most. If five days is more than you have, the 4 day Rome itinerary keeps the same essential arc, while the 3 day Rome itinerary focuses on the biggest first-trip highlights.

Before You Go to Rome
Not even slightly. Five days gives the Colosseum, Forum, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps one full first day, leaves a whole day for eating and shopping through the historic centre and Monti, and makes room for the Capitoline Museums and Galleria Borghese without rushing either. You also get a proper day south of the centre for the market, the Baths of Caracalla and the catacombs — or you can swap that day for a trip out of the city.
Give day one to the Pantheon, Colosseum, Forum, Altar of the Fatherland, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Keep day two for the Vatican and Trastevere, then use day three for eating and shopping through the historic centre and Monti. Day four is Museum Day, pairing the Capitoline Museums with a booked Galleria Borghese slot and the Leonardo museum. Finish south of the centre with the market, Baths of Caracalla and catacombs.
Start with the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Galleria Borghese. Those are the three fixed reservations most likely to shape this itinerary. Choose your day-five option before buying anything else, since you only need the catacombs, Ostia or Tivoli—not all three.
