A Little About This Trip
If royal interiors, historic neighborhoods, and major art museums are your favorite parts of a trip, this is the Madrid itinerary I would choose! 🎨 Day one takes you through the Royal Palace and Habsburg Madrid before flamenco at night. 👑 Day two brings in modern Madrid along Gran Vía and the Bernabéu, then the final day slows down around El Retiro and Madrid’s Art Walk.
The Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza all appear on the last day, so you can see how Spanish and European art changes across different periods and collections. 🖼️ Give that day your energy—three museums is ambitious, but this route is intentionally built for someone who wants the art to be the main event. If you prefer a more balanced first-timer trip, use my standard 3-day Madrid itinerary. My 4-day Madrid itinerary offers the Art Walk as one option and lets you choose Toledo or Segovia instead, while the food itinerary trades museum time for markets, tapas, and a paella class.

- A glass-and-iron market filled with independent food and drink counters
- My favorite bite was the octopus-and-potato skewer 🐟

Before You Go to Madrid
Yes, though this is a full three days. You'll explore the Royal Palace and Habsburg Madrid first, spend the second day along Gran Vía with the Bernabéu, then devote the last day to El Retiro and the three Art Walk museums. Don't miss the Royal Armoury while you're at the palace—it's included with your ticket and was my favorite surprise there.
You can, but only when the museum hours support the late Thyssen finish. Give the Prado about three hours and keep the other two visits focused—three museums back to back is a long day, even though they're close together. The route works best on a Saturday or during extended summer hours. Avoid Tuesday, when the Reina Sofía is closed, and Monday, when the Thyssen closes at 4:00 PM.
Book the Royal Palace first, then reserve timed entries for the Prado and Reina Sofía. Those three visits are the anchors of this art-and-history route, while the smaller museums can stay more flexible. 🎨
