A Little About This Trip
Three days in Madrid gives you a really satisfying mix of royal history, art, football, food, and modern city energy! ✨ Begin with the Royal Palace and old Madrid, stopping for Mercado de San Miguel and churros before an intimate flamenco show. The palace interiors are STUNNING, but the Royal Armoury was my favorite surprise—I had never seen real armor made for children, horses, and even dogs.
Day two moves from El Retiro and the Crystal Palace to the Bernabéu and Prado, while day three is your chance to shop Gran Vía and watch Madrid glow from the 360º rooftop. ⚽ Leave time for Museo del Jamón and MYKA Greek Yogurt along the way; both turned into memorable food stops for me! 😋 If you need a faster route, use my 2-day Madrid itinerary. - The interiors feel like royalty just stepped away
- Child-sized royal armor and horse armor were my FAVORITE surprise!
- A guide makes the frescoes and hidden symbolism easier to understand
Plaza Mayor
Why this stop?
- Madrid’s grand historic square is wrapped in red-brick arcades
- Casa de la Panadería adds colorful frescoes above the plaza
- Street performers and cafés keep the square buzzing after dark
- The summer sky was somehow still SO bright at 9 p.m.!
Mercado de San Miguel
Why this stop?
- A glass-and-iron market filled with independent food and drink counters
- My favorite bite was the octopus-and-potato skewer 🐟
- Try seafood, cheeses, cured meats, sweets, and drinks without choosing one restaurant
- Open counters let you watch each small plate come together

- You can easily wander here for hours away from the busy streets

- A beautiful glass-and-iron pavilion beside Retiro’s pond
- Ducks, turtles, and a waterfall make the setting feel alive
- I saw the most beautiful black swan gliding outside! 🦆

- One of my best meals in Spain—healthy, stylish, and affordable!
- Tuna tataki and chimichurri beef were both a 10/10

Before You Go to Madrid
Yes! Three days works really well for a first trip. Day one covers the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, San Ginés, and flamenco. Day two combines El Retiro with the Bernabéu and Prado, and day three is for Gran Vía and the 360 rooftop. It's a full itinerary, but each day has a clear part of the city to focus on.
Yes, but it's a full day. The stadium tour takes about two hours, followed by roughly 40 minutes back to the Paseo del Prado by bus, so you'll reach the Prado in the late afternoon. Check the fixture list before booking: the Bernabéu tour is shortened on match days and closes about five and a half hours before kickoff.
Reserve the Royal Palace, your flamenco show and the Bernabéu first. These are the fixed-time experiences most likely to shape the route; the parks, neighborhoods and food stops can fit around them. 🎟️
