A Little About This Trip
This three-day Madrid itinerary is for the traveler who plans the sightseeing around what they want to eat next! 😋 You’ll still see the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, El Retiro, the Bernabéu, and Gran Vía, but the days are anchored by Mercado de San Miguel, churros at San Ginés, a La Latina tapas crawl, El Rastro, and a hands-on paella class. 🥘 My favorite market bite was the octopus-and-potato skewer, so arrive hungry enough to try a few counters instead of committing to one full meal.
The smaller stops are part of the fun too: Museo del Jamón had the best beer of our trip, MYKA’s tangy frozen yogurt was so delightful that we walked to another neighborhood for a second round, and the 360º rooftop gives you a gorgeous final sunset. 🌆 For a more classic sightseeing split, see my standard 3-day Madrid itinerary. The 2-day route is the quick version, and the 4-day itinerary adds a museum or day-trip finale.

Why this stop?
- Royal art and ceremony fill room after ornate room
- The interiors feel like royalty just stepped away
- Child-sized royal armor and horse armor were my FAVORITE surprise!
- A guide makes the frescoes and hidden symbolism easier to understand
Stop 3~ 1 hour
Plaza Mayor
Why this stop?
- Madrid’s grand historic square is wrapped in red-brick arcades
- Casa de la Panadería adds colorful frescoes above the plaza
- Street performers and cafés keep the square buzzing after dark
- The summer sky was somehow still SO bright at 9 p.m.!

Mercado de San Miguel
Why this stop?
- A glass-and-iron market filled with independent food and drink counters
- My favorite bite was the octopus-and-potato skewer 🐟
- Try seafood, cheeses, cured meats, sweets, and drinks without choosing one restaurant
- Open counters let you watch each small plate come together

- You can easily wander here for hours away from the busy streets

- Rowboat reservations open only 12 hours before each session

Crystal Palace
Why this stop?
- A beautiful glass-and-iron pavilion beside Retiro’s pond
- Ducks, turtles, and a waterfall make the setting feel alive
- I saw the most beautiful black swan gliding outside! 🦆
Practical Tips
- The pavilion is closed for renovation until mid-2027
Stop 3~ 2 hours
El Rastro flea market (Sundays only)
Why this stop?
- Madrid’s huge Sunday market spills through La Latina’s streets
- Browse antiques, vintage clothing, books, records, art, and unexpected finds
- Side streets add permanent antique shops, galleries, and taverns
- Part of the fun is never knowing what conversation or bargain comes next

- One of my best meals in Spain—healthy, stylish, and affordable!
- Tuna tataki and chimichurri beef were both a 10/10

- An ornate Beaux-Arts landmark where Alcalá meets Gran Vía
- The slate-and-gold dome is impossible to miss
- Winged Victory and the glowing façade create a serious WOW after dark!

Museo del Jamón
Why this stop?
- A bustling ham shop, bar, and restaurant beneath hanging jamones
- The ice-cold beer was the BEST of our entire trip!
- Black-label acorn-fed ibérico makes the quality difference easy to taste

- A glass walkway hangs high above Plaza de España

- Watching the whole city glow was absolutely worth it! 🌆
Before You Go to Madrid
Yes! You'll graze through Mercado de San Miguel, stop for churros and chocolate at San Ginés, and finish with a tapas crawl through La Latina. The route also includes a market visit, a paella class, specialty coffee, and plenty of time along Gran Vía. It still leaves room for the Royal Palace, Bernabéu, and Prado too.
Yes, and there is an important conflict to solve before you book. El Rastro runs only on Sundays and public holidays, while this paella class runs Monday through Saturday at 10:00 AM. They can't happen on the same day as currently scheduled, so you'll need to choose a different class time or move one of those activities.
Reserve the tapas tour, paella-and-sangria workshop and flamenco show first. They run at fixed times with limited places, and together they are the experiences that distinguish this route from the standard Madrid itinerary. 🍷
