A Little About This Trip
Four days is such a fun amount of time in Barcelona because you can cover the major sights and still leave room for the city’s food, shopping, and nightlife! ✨ The first two days give you Gaudí’s Eixample, the Gothic Quarter, La Boqueria, and Barceloneta. Then day three mixes a helicopter view over Barcelona with the Palau de la Música and Picasso Museum in El Born. 🚁 Save plenty of room for dinner—Sensi was my favorite restaurant of the trip, and Jon Cake was so good we went back before flying home.
For your final day, choose Montserrat for mountains and the basilica or stay in the city for Sant Pau and a full Montjuïc afternoon. Either option gives the trip a completely different finish from the historic center. 🏔️ If four days is too much, my 3-day Barcelona itinerary keeps the essentials and one flexible finale. If you can stay longer, the 5-day itinerary includes El Born, Montjuïc, and Montserrat without making you choose.

- We returned for the paella negra and octopus—and cleaned both plates 😋
- A relaxed pavement terrace right by Plaça de Catalunya

Sagrada Familia Basilica
Why this stop?
- Gaudí's unfinished basilica looks unlike any other church I've seen
- Stained-glass light makes the interior feel otherworldly 🌈
- Climbing beside the construction was my Barcelona highlight! 🤩

- A period apartment and brick-arched attic reveal the building from inside
- The rooftop's helmeted chimneys and city views are THE payoff! 😍

- Little counter bars let you eat directly beside the market stalls
- Whole hams hanging above the aisles make it unmistakably Barcelona

- A big terrace overlooking the yachts in Barceloneta marina 🛥️
- Probably the BEST sangria we had anywhere in Spain!
- Mixed paella and grilled ribeye make this more than a drinks stop

Before You Go to Barcelona
Definitely — and the fourth day is what lets you breathe. Days one and two cover what most people come for: Gaudí along Passeig de Gràcia, then the Gothic Quarter and Barceloneta. Day three is the fun one, with a helicopter flight over the city before the Palau de la Música and the Museu Picasso in El Born. That leaves the last day free for a proper day out, which is hard to justify on a shorter trip.
Go with Montserrat if you want out of the city — it's about an hour northwest, and the mountain, the abbey and La Moreneta fill a day easily. Pick Montjuïc if you'd rather stay close: you start at Sant Pau's mosaic pavilions, cross to the Romanesque halls of the MNAC, then the castle above the harbor, Poble Espanyol and the FC Barcelona Museum. Busier on paper, but you never leave town.
Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló are the first reservations to make because their timed slots set day one. Book the Palau de la Música Catalana for day three next, then reserve only the Montserrat or Montjuïc option you choose for day four. 🎟️
