A Little About This Trip
Eight days gives you a road trip across Kyushu, even though every city on this route has more to see than you could ever fit into one or two days! 🚗 You’ll begin with the complete two-day Fukuoka route: Fukuoka Castle, teamLab Forest, BOSS E・ZO, Fukuoka Tower, Hakata Old Town, a Nakasu river cruise, and the yatai on day one, followed by Dazaifu, the Kyushu National Museum, Tenjin shopping, I’m Donut, and motsunabe on day two. 🍜 Then you’ll combine Yufuin and Beppu into one onsen-filled day before continuing to Kumamoto for the castle, Sakura no Baba Jōsaien, Kumamon Square, Akaushi beef, and basashi. 🏯♨️
The middle of the trip trades city time for two days around Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen, and Takachiho’s forests, sacred sites, and gorge. 🌋 You’ll then finish with two days in Kagoshima: an early Shiroyama view followed by Sengan-en, Kagoshima City Aquarium, Sakurajima, and shaved ice at Tenmonkan Mujaki on the first day. For day eight, Option A pairs Kirishima Jingu with the purple-yam dessert at Take Out Moca. Option B visits Chiran Peace Museum before Ibusuki’s geothermal sand bath. For a standalone version of the opening city days, use my 2-day Fukuoka itinerary or 3-day Fukuoka itinerary. For a slightly shorter version, use my 7-day Kyushu itinerary.

Before You Go to Kyushu
This road trip gives Fukuoka and Kagoshima two days each, combines Yufuin and Beppu into one day, and includes one day in Kumamoto plus two days for Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen and Takachiho. On the final day, you choose between Ibusuki and Kirishima rather than trying to squeeze both into one route.
Choose Ibusuki for Chiran’s wartime history and the distinctive geothermal sand bath. Choose Kirishima for a scenic road trip mixing Kirishima Jingu and the purple-yam Mont Blanc soft serve at Take Out Moca.
Look into Saga or Nagasaki next, but give either destination enough room to enjoy instead of squeezing it into this already full road trip. You could also slow the existing route down because every city here has more to see than one or two days can hold.
