A Little About This Trip
A full week now gives you the complete two-day Fukuoka route before the road trip begins! ✨ Day one moves from Fukuoka Castle and Ōhori Park to teamLab Forest, BOSS E・ZO, Fukuoka Tower, Hakata Old Town, a Nakasu river cruise, and the yatai. 🍜 Day two follows Dazaifu Tenmangu and the Kyushu National Museum with Tenjin Underground Mall, I’m Donut, and a comforting motsunabe dinner. From there, you’ll combine Yufuin and Beppu into one faster onsen-town day, moving from Yufuin’s storybook shops and Lake Kinrin to Beppu’s geothermal hells, steam-cooked food, and a proper soak. ♨️
The route then continues through Kumamoto for castle history, basashi, and akagyu beef 🏯 before heading into Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen, and Takachiho’s remote mountain scenery. 🌋 Kagoshima comes last for Shiroyama Observatory, Sengan-en, Kagoshima City Aquarium, Sakurajima, and shaved ice at Tenmonkan Mujaki. We rented a car for our Kyushu trip, and it makes this route much easier once you leave the major city hubs. You can follow the city portion separately in my 2-day Fukuoka itinerary, or stay an extra day with my 3-day Fukuoka itinerary. The 6-day itinerary keeps only day one of the Fukuoka route, while the 8-day route adds a second day in Kagoshima.

Before You Go to Kyushu
Yes. Seven days gives Fukuoka two full days before combining Yufuin and Beppu into one faster onsen-town day. The route then continues through Kumamoto, Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen and Takachiho before finishing in Kagoshima.
Plan to change bases several times in this order: Fukuoka, Yufuin or Beppu, Kumamoto, Kurokawa or Aso, Takachiho, and finally Kagoshima. The changing scenery is the point of this route, but packing light will make it much easier.
